After twenty-eight hours of travel and only a few hours of sleep, I barely knew my name. My friend, Christine, flew into Madrid from Germany and we met there continuing on to Pamplona and then by bus to Saint Jean-Pied-De-Port, France.
We arrived at the albergue “Beilari” (also called refuge or hostel) in time for a gathering with the other pilgrims and a delicious vegetarian meal. I knew I would need a day to acclimate and over jet-lag and this is the perfect place!
I slept a solid 9 1/2 hours. This is a miracle on any given day but not a surprise because I was exhausted!
Today is beautiful, sunny, and warm. After breakfast we washed out our clothes and hung them to dry (this will be an everyday affair given I only have two of everything). I walked to the Pilgrims office to get my “Credencial del Peregrino/Pilgrim passport and now I am official! We explored the quaint town of Saint Jean Pied-De-Port and are now relaxing. Tomorrow the 775 kilometer (approximately 500 mile) journey begins by going over the Pyrenees back into Spain towards Santiago. Ready or not…..
Happy trails! Glad you and Christine made it safe and sound. I’m waiting to hear about the food you eat and people you meet. Vaya con Dios!
Oh to be on the trail again….so jealous of all the good, the bad and the beautiful moments and the burning feet. Be safe. Hike on sister!
