Sunset over Santiago

We arrived into Santiago, after a short 20 km walk, around 1:30. It was after the daily Pilgrims Mass was over so we saw a number of people we knew. It was a mixture of excitement and relief to have completed the 775 kilometers (approximately 500 miles) My body felt tired and all I wanted to do was get checked into our hotel and get the pack off my back.

I saw my friend, Gerard from Ireland, whom I had walked with the first twelve days and I was so excited to see him. He was a wealth of information about Santiago since he had arrived a week before. He showed us some wonderful cafés and tapas bars. He also had great information about Finisterre and Muxia. This is an additional walk that some Pilgrims choose to do. It is a 90-100 kilometer walk and goes all the way to the coast. I really thought I was done walking but have decided after two days rest that I am ready to do another four days. One of the deciding factors for me is the weather; it is meant to be sunny and warm for the next five days!

Yesterday I attended the Pilgrims Mass and the highlight was the swinging giant incense burner that apparently doesn’t happen everyday. It was a spectacular sight!

Besides being tired, I feel a mix of different emotions. While I do feel a great sense of accomplishment, I have not grasped yet exactly what this Camino has taught me. One of the gifts is to truly live in the moment because that is what we have. It has made me appreciate the simple things in life and to realize how little we really need to be happy.

I have met people from all over the world and mostly people were considerate, happy and compassionate. What would the world be like if everybody was that way? There was certainly a bond between the Pilgrims. It was created by a common goal and a true understanding of what this journey took to accomplish. I feel I have made some lasting friendships and will miss my Camino friends but they will remain in my heart always.

So my journey continues tomorrow and I will happily keep you updated along the way. Take a moment in your day to pause and give thanks for all you have to be grateful for. Life is an amazing journey!
